​Continuing one of the longest-running sportsmanship initiatives in the state, Flint Metro League winter varsity coaches have selected the teams that showed the best sportsmanship in league competition this season.  Since 1998, every varsity coach has named the league opponent they believe showed the best sportsmanship when they competed.

Special recognition for this past winter season goes to Brandon High School for leading all league teams with nine winter teams selecting the Blackhawks for showing the best sportsmanship.

Teams selected for showing the best sportsmanship this winter include:

For wrestling:  Holly (selected by three opponents), Brandon (selected by two opponents), Flushing (selected by two opponents), Clio (selected by one opponent)

Competitive cheer:  Swartz Creek (selected by three opponents), Clio (two opponents), Brandon, Holly and Linden (selected by one opponent each)

Boys basketball:  Brandon (selected by three opponents), Kearsley (two opponents), Clio, Fenton, Flushing (one opponent each)

Girls basketball:  Brandon (selected by two opponents), Fenton (two opponents), Flushing (two opponents), Linden (two opponents)

Boys bowling:  Flushing (selected by three opponents), Brandon, Clio, Holly, Linden (one opponent each)

Girls bowling:  Holly (selected by two opponents), Clio, Fenton, Kearsley, Linden (one opponent each)

Boys swim/dive:  Fenton (selected by three opponents), and Kearsley (two opponents)

The Flint Metro League's Athletes of the Month for February are Kassidy Krist from Kearsley High School and Jack Olson from Brandon High School.

Kassidy is a member of the MHSAA District Championship and FML Championship competitive cheer team from Kearsley.  In addition to her outstanding classroom GPA of 4.038, Kassidy excelled during her senior season with selections to 1st team All-Metro, 1st team All-Region and 2nd Team All-State teams.  Kassidy helped the Hornets to a Metro Championship, District Championship and a 7th place finish at the D2 State Meet.  Next fall, Kassidy plans to continue her education in preparation to become an optometrist.

Jack Olson carries a 3.56 grade point average and is a 4 year varsity wrestler for Brandon HS.  He was a Metro and District Champion and a State qualifier at #112. Jack has been a member of 4 straight District Team Championships for the Blackhawks.  To cap off his career, Captain Olson placed 8th at the Individual MHSAA D2 State Finals and was also named as Academic All-State. Following graduation, Jack will attend Western Michigan University to continue his education.
