Winter Scholar-Athletes Announced by Flint Metro League

Varsity athletes who achieved Scholar-Athlete status for the recently completed winter sports season have been named by Flint Metro League schools.  Varsity letter winners in 10th, 11th and 12th grades who played an official league sport and have maintained a minimum 3.50 cumulative grade point average achieve Flint Metro League Scholar-Athlete awards.  Award winners for each school are linked below; in addition, each sport's all-league team list has been updated to show which all-league athletes also achieved Scholar-Athlete status.

Flint Metro League Announces Winter Sportsmanship Awards

Continuing one of the longest-running sportsmanship initiatives in the state, Flint Metro League winter varsity coaches have selected the teams that showed the best sportsmanship in league competition this season.  Since 1998, every varsity coach has named the league opponent they believe showed the best sportsmanship when they competed.

Special recognition for this past winter season goes to Owosso High School for leading all league teams with 14 winter teams selecting the Trojans for showing the best sportsmanship.

Teams selected for showing the best sportsmanship this winter include:

For wrestling:  Owosso (selected by 5 opponents), Holly (selected by 2 opponents), and Flushing (selected by 2 opponents) 

Competitive cheer:  Linden (selected by 3 opponents), Owosso (2 opponents), Fenton (2 opponents), Clio and Swartz Creek (selected by 1 opponent each)

Boys basketball:  Owosso (selected by 3 opponents), Brandon (2 opponents), Clio, Fenton, Kearsley and Linden  (1 opponent each)

Girls basketball:  Owosso (selected by 3 opponents), Brandon (selected by 2 opponents), Fenton (1 opponent), Flushing (1 opponent), Linden (1 opponent)

Boys bowling:  Brandon (selected by 4 opponents), Fenton, Flushing, Kearsley and Holly (1 opponent each)

Girls bowling:  Fenton (selected by 6 opponents), Brandon, Fenton, Kearsley (1 opponent each)

Boys swim/dive:  Owosso (selected by 4 opponents), Brandon and Fenton (1 opponent each)

Linden's Blake Hutchings and Flushing's Cal Endicott Named Metro March Athletes of the Month

Three time All-State gymnast Blake Hutchings from Linden and three sport All-Metro Cal Endicott from Flushing have been named the Flint Metro League's Athletes of the Month for March.

Blake Hutchings capped a stellar career in gymnastics by helping her team to a 10th place finish at the MHSAA Finals.  Individually, Blake has been a multiple All-State gymnast, on the vault as a freshman and on the floor as a junior.  As a senior, Blake placed in all four events with a runner-up finish on the beam.  She earned 3rd place in the All-Around.  Also a standout in the classroom with a 3.64 GPA, Blake plans to attend a university that offers a strong Business Management program.


Cal Endicott has been an outstanding three sport athlete for the Raiders, earning 1st Team All-Metro honors in football, basketball and track, a rare occurrence indeed.  This past season, Cal led his team to a 3rd consecutive Metro basketball title.  In football, he was also named 1st Team and broke five school football records.  ABC12 named Cal as an Athlete of the Week and the Genesee County Player of the Year.  Cal was also a member of the 4x400 1st Team All Metro relay team.  Cal has accepted an athletic scholarship to Grand Valley State University where he will continue his football career.

Kearsley Girls Bowling Dynasty Continues

Along with attaining its 30th state team championship in its 50-year history, the Flint Metro League continues their strong presence at the MHSAA state finals in bowling by sending 3 boys teams, two girls teams and 7 boys and 8 girls to the individual bowling finals.

The Kearsley girls 
defeated Tecumseh in the title match to again be crowned the Class B State Team Champions. The Hornet victory made them state champions for the 5th consecutive year and 6th time in the last 7 years....incredible!  Owosso's boys and girls teams qualified for the team portion of the finals as did the boys teams from Flushing and Kearsley.

Kearsley's Imari Blond was the individual state runner-up in Division 2 bowling the day after helping the Hornets to the team championship. Teammate Barbara Hawes made the state semirfinals by defeating teammate Alexis Roof in the qualifying round.  Owosso's Laken Williamson also made the individual qualifying round.

Two of the seven league boys bowling finalists made it to the afternoon tournament for the individual championship.  In Division 1, Flushing's Nick DuCharme was eliminated in the quarterfinal round.  In Division 2, Brandon's Jeremiah Turner also made the qualifying round.

Cushman Repeats As Undefeated Wrestling Champion

At the MHSAA individual Wrestling Championships, 13  wrestlers from the Flint Metro League made trips to the medal stand in ten weight classes.

Flushing's Ben Cushman repeated as the undefeated state champion at #189 pounds with a stellar 56-0 record.  Holly's Cade Dallwitz was a state runner-up at 171 pounds.  Other league medalists included Fenton's' Jayden Rittenbury (3rd at 135) and Brady Triola (7th at 135); Brandon's Corbin Hallberg (4th at 103); Lindens' Justin Cygnar (5th at 119); Clios' Alex Moore (6th at 152), Alex Yocom (8th at 285); Holly's Blake Querio (6th at 285), and Carsen Cuthbert (6th at 145); Kearsley's Andy Ruhstorfer (6th at 125); and Swartz Creek's Lance Clapp (8th at 285).

In a tight race through-out the Metro Competitive Cheer season, the Kearsley Hornets prevailed to defend their title and were again crowned league champions.

Linden led the sportsmanship voting with nominations from 3 Metro opponents.  Owosso and Fenton were nominated by two league opponents while Clio and Swartz Creek were each nominated by one team.

The Flint Metro coaches selected Rosa Spannagel as the 17-18 Coach of the Year.

Congratulations to Kearsley and Swartz Creek who advanced from MHSAA Districts to Regional competition.

Three Metro Girls Basketball Teams Advance to District Finals

Flushing, Kearsley and Holly have all advanced to MHSAA Class A District Basketball Championship games on Friday March 2, 2018.

Defending Class A State Champion Flushing will play Carman Ainsworth at Carman at 7:00 pm

Kearsley will host Davison  at 7:00pm.

Holly will play Clarkston at Clarkston 7:00 pm.

Best of luck to all three teams!
