Brandon's Pierce and Fenton's Lloyd are Metro Athletes of the Month for May

5/27/2015

Madison Pierce, an all-state track athlete from Brandon High School, and John Lloyd, a state qualifier in golf, have been named the Flint Metro League's Athletes of the Month for May.

Madison Pierce, also named the Flint area May Female Athlete of the Month, has excelled for four years in track and field for the Blackhawks, qualifying for the state championship meet every year of her high school career.  Her best finish at the state meet to date has been runner-up in the pole vault as a junior.  She qualified for this year's state meet in four events, winning the long jump, anchoring the winning 4x100 relay, and finishing second in the pole vault and 100 meter dash while leading Brandon to the regional championship.  She took three firsts and one second at this year's Flint Metro League championship meet, missing first place in the long jump by 1/2".  Carrying a 3.50 grade point average, Madison plans to attain her CRNA using a full-ride scholarship.

John Lloyd has the distinction of shooting a hole-in-one at last year's MHSAA state golf finals.  Earning four varsity letters for the Tigers, John has been a first team all-league golfer every year of high school, winning the league individual championship three times:  as a freshman and sophomore in the season-ending tournament, and the pre-season tournament this year, carding a 72 over 18 holes (tied for fifth-best score in 48 years in league tournaments).  Holder of three school records and a 3.802 GPA, John will attend Kettering University, majoring in Mechanical Engineering while playing intermural golf because, according to John, "Kettering is where I fit best".

Linden Repeats As Girls' Soccer League Title Goes to Final Game

5/20/2015

It came down to a must-win game at the end of the league season, but Linden handed Fenton its first league defeat of the girls' soccer season, 5-0, to repeat as league champion, its sixth league championship overall.  Madison Paige made seven saves to record the shutout, and Gabby Freeman, Erica Breitling, Maddie Zayan (2) and Alia Frederick scored goals.

Linden's only loss came in a shootout with Flushing.  This was the first season for Metro League girls' soccer using a new system for use when games are tied in regulation.  Teams received three points for a win in regulation, two points for a win in a shootout, and one point for a loss in a shootout.  Overtimes are not played in league games.

Flushing's Winiarski Sets New League Record in Leading Raiders to Boys' Golf Title

5/11/2015

Flushing senior Nick Winiarski shot a league-record 69 over 18 holes at Fenton Farms Golf Club to pace his boys' golf team to the Flint Metro League championship in their first year in the league.  The previous record was a 70 by Fenton's Dave Hanson at the season-ending tournament in 1977 held at Tyrone Hills GC.

Flushing  capped a perfect league season by carding a team score of 305, three shots over the league's team record of 302 held by the 1995 Fenton squad.  Flushing had a perfect 7-0 dual match season in between conference tournaments; the Raiders nipped Fenton by three shots, 334-337, in the league's pre-season tourney held on April 15.

Fenton held onto second place by shooting a 324 in the cloudy but mild conditions.  Holly claimed third on the day and for the season by coming in with a 326.
