Holly's Evan Vergith Named First Team All-State; Will Sophiea is Coach of the Year

10/30/2015

Holly’s senior captain and number 1 singles player, Evan Vergith, has been named First Team All-State by the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association.  MHSTCA also voted Holly coach Will Sophiea State Coach of the Year.

Evan is the second Holly Tennis Player ever to be named to the MHSTCA Boys All-State First Team. Jeff Sophiea was the first to be named in 2013.

In his senior season at the 1 singles flight, Evan was conference champion, regional finalist, and state quarterfinalist. Evan’s four year career consisted of four seasons in the varsity singles lineup. As a freshman, Evan was a conference finalist and regional finalist at the 3 singles flight. In Evan’s sophomore season he was conference finalist at the 2 singles flight but did not compete in the regional tournament due to an injury. As a junior, Evan moved to the 1 singles flight and was a regional champion and conference finalist.

The Flint Metro League congratulates Evan and Coach Sophiea for earning these state-wide accolades.

Linden's Klavitter and Clio's Taljonick Named Metro's October Athletes of the Month

10/30/2015

Volleyball standout Megan Klavitter from Linden and distance runner Ethan Taljonick from Clio have been named Athletes of the Month by the Flint Metro League.  Megan and Ethan join September honorees Brianna Costigan and Jacob Lee from Fenton as contenders for the Flint-area Male and Female Athlete of the Year title, to be named in June by the Kiwanis Club of Flint.

Megan Klavitter has been an all-Metro League volleyball selection since being named to the second team as a freshman, adding first team honors as a sophomore and a junior.  She was also all-region in 2013 and 2014, and as team captain for the third year in her career led Linden to a 6-1 league record, including snapping Flushing's 71-match league winning streak on September 29.  A 4.1 GPA student, Megan has also lettered in softball for the Eagles and is active in her student council and the National Honor Society.

Ethan Taljonick captained the Mustang cross country team to its first Flint Metro League championship, capping a stellar four-year career by making first-team all-league for the second time.  Ethan has been to the MHSAA state championship meet every year of his career, being a part of the state-qualifying team as a freshman and qualifying as an individual his sophomore and junior years.  He was regional runner-up as a junior.  Also a state qualifier in the two mile in track as a junior, Ethan maintains a 3.96 GPA while being active in National Honor Society, with his church youth group and as a mentor for freshmen at Clio High School.

Four Metro League Football Teams Make MHSAA Playoffs

10/30/2015

For the first time since 2012, four football teams from the Flint Metro League qualified for the MHSAA playoffs.  League champion Fenton (8-1) and Holly (5-4) qualified in Division 2, while league runner-up Linden (7-2) and Brandon (6-3) qualified in Division 3. As it turns out, Fenton will host Holly and Linden will host Brandon in the first round of the playoffs.

All teams statewide with at least 6 wins qualify for the playoffs, with the balance of the 256-team field filled by teams with records of 5-4, 5-3 or 4-4 based on "playoff points", a method of determining success against teams with good records.  An equitable number of teams is placed in the playoff pool in each MHSAA enrollment class, A through D.  This year, there were ten 5-4 teams from Class A placed in the playoff pool, which included Holly.  Along with a 4-3 league record, all against Class A schools, Holly defeated Berkley (Class A) which ended with a 7-2 record, and lost to Class B Williamston (5-4).

Fenton, Lapeer West, Linden and Swartz Creek qualified for the playoffs in 2012, when the Metro League had nine member schools.  The only other year that at least half of the league schools qualified for the football playoffs was 2011, when Brandon, Fenton, Holly, Lapeer East, Lapeer West and Linden all qualified
