All teams statewide with at least 6 wins qualify for the playoffs, with the balance of the 256-team field filled by teams with records of 5-4, 5-3 or 4-4 based on "playoff points", a method of determining success against teams with good records. An equitable number of teams is placed in the playoff pool in each MHSAA enrollment class, A through D. This year, there were ten 5-4 teams from Class A placed in the playoff pool, which included Holly. Along with a 4-3 league record, all against Class A schools, Holly defeated Berkley (Class A) which ended with a 7-2 record, and lost to Class B Williamston (5-4).
Fenton, Lapeer West, Linden and Swartz Creek qualified for the playoffs in 2012, when the Metro League had nine member schools. The only other year that at least half of the league schools qualified for the football playoffs was 2011, when Brandon, Fenton, Holly, Lapeer East, Lapeer West and Linden all qualified.
