Flint Metro League Announces January Athletes of the Month

1/10/2018

Kearsley's Barbara Hawes and Flushing's Benjamin Cushman have been announced as Athletes of the Month for January for the Flint Metro League.

Barbara Hawes is a four-year member of the accomplished Kearsley bowling program and also an excellent student with a 3.502 GPA.  Barb has earned honors as First Team All-Metro for two seasons and also is a two time individual state qualifier.  As a junior, she finished in the top 8 in the State Finals and earned a berth on the 2nd Team All-State team.  She has been an important member of the Hornet team which has earned an impressive Regional Championship and two State Championships.   Barb's most recent accomplishment came just this past weekend when she rolled 12 straight strikes for a 300 game at the Metro Tournament.   In the Fall, Barbara intends to continue her bowling career at the collegiate level with a major in marketing or accounting. Barb was also selected as the Flint Kiwanis Athlete of the Month and is now in the running for the Flint Kiwanis Athlete of the Year.

Undefeated state wrestling champion as a junior, Flushing's Ben Cushman also excels in the classroom with a 3.773 GPA.  Ben completed his junior season with an incredible 56-0 record at 215 pounds. The three-year team captain has also been a two-time Flint Metro League Champion and state qualifier.  He earned District Championships as both a freshman and junior.  Ben holds the school record for the Raiders for the most consecutive wins.  Ben will continue his wrestling career at Central Michigan University where he will study biology and biomedical sciences on academic and athletic scholarships.
