Metro League Makes Presence Felt at MHSAA Bowling and Wrestling Finals

3/6/2016

Along with attaining its 27th state team championship in its 48-year history, the Flint Metro League made its presence known at the MHSAA state finals in bowling and wrestling by sending 9 boys and 6 girls to the individual bowling finals and 23 boys to the state individual wreslting finals.

Kearsley's Hannah Ploof won the individual state championship in Division 2 bowling the day after helping the Hornets to their third consecutive team championship.  Hannah joins her sister Lindsay as a state champion, as Lindsay claimed the crown in 2011.  Teammate Alexxa Flood made the state quarterfinals before bowing out of the tournament.

Three of the nine league boys bowling finalists made it to the afternoon tournament for the individual championship.  In Division 1, Swartz Creek's Chase Kaufman was eliminated in the quarterfinal round.  In Division 2, Kearsley's state team runner-up was represented by Bryce McKerchie, who bowed out in the quarterfinals, and Chad Stephen, who made the individual final four before elimination.

At the MHSAA individual wrestling championships, eleven wrestlers from the Flint Metro League made trips to the medal stand in ten weight classes, all in Division 2.  Leading the way was Brandon's Bryan LaVearn who finished second at 140 pounds.  Teammate Brendan Ladd was third at 130 pounds, and Linden's Dawson Blank was also third at 145.  Other league medalists included Clios' Chase Smith (5th at 160), Kane Williams (5th at 189) and Drew Hutchinson (6th at 112); Holly's Jimmy Gray (5th at 215), Colton Cleaver (7th at 152), and Mitch Nelson (8th at 125); and Kearsley's Dylan Terrance (7th at 160) and Andrew Ruhstorfer (8th at 103).
