Fenton High School edged Goodrich High School by 10 strokes in the Metro League Tournament to earn a share of league title for 2020. Fenton’s team score of 335 ties a Metro League record set also by the Tigers in 2018 at Fenton Farms. As returning champions, Goodrich entered the tournament with an undefeated 9-0 dual record. Fenton posted a 8-1 dual record losing only to Goodrich by a single stroke.
Victoria Carnell of Fenton was the tournament medalist posting an 81 at Springfield Oaks. Closely behind to round out the top 5 individuals were Brook Herbstreit of Fenton with 82, Amanda Miller from Goodrich and Olivia Herbert of Fenton with 84, and Olivia Rushton of Goodrich with 86.
Congratulations to Fenton’s Kurt Herbstreit who was named by the league coaches as the Flint Metro League Coach of the Year. This marks the 6th time Coach Herbstreit has won this award in girls golf along with twice for boys golf since the league initiated the award in 2016.
Brandon HS received three sportsmanship votes by opponents, Linden received two votes, and Clio, Fenton, Flushing, Goodrich and Kearsley each received one vote.
All teams will now enter MHSAA Regional competition beginning on October 5th. Kearsley, Flushing and Swartz Creek will compete in D2 competition at the Pohlcat in Mt. Pleasant on Oct 7; Holly will also be in D2 at Farmington Hills GC on Oct 8; Fenton and Linden will be in D2 competition at the Emerald in St. Johns Oct Oct7. Clio, Corunna and Owosso are in D3 at the Flint Golf Club on Oct 5th ; Brandon and Goodrich will compete at Heather Hills in D3 on Oct 6th. Best of luck to all our Metro teams!
